How do I write a letter to my legislators about a bill?

Choose Take action on a bill, pick support or oppose, review the letter AI drafts for you, edit it, and send.

Starting a letter

  • Website: choose Take Action or Make your voice heard on a bill, from Home, My Bills, the Capitol Calendar or the bill's page.
  • App: the Act tab lists bills that need your voice now. You can also swipe a bill row to the right, or tap Take action on a bill's page.

The steps

  1. Choose your position: Support (urge legislators to vote yes) or Oppose (urge them to vote no). If the bill has been analyzed, our recommendation is shown to help you decide.
  2. Review the draft. AI writes a personal letter from your position and the bill's content. It is written to be read by a legislator's office: short, respectful and specific.
  3. Make it yours. Edit the subject and message freely. To have it rewritten, choose Regenerate on the website and add instructions if you like, or use Rewrite the letter in the app, for example "make it shorter" or "mention that I am a teacher". A letter in your own words carries the most weight.
  4. Check the recipients. The app shows who will receive the letter and why. You can leave someone out. See the article on who receives your letter.
  5. Send. How it goes out depends on the office. See the article on how letters are delivered.

Your letter is signed with your name and, unless you turn it off, your street address. See the article on your address in letters.

Things that can stop a letter

  • You already wrote at this stage. See the article on "already contacted".
  • The bill is not open to action, for example it has passed, failed, or is a placeholder bill that has not been filled in.
  • A message limit. Some offices' contact forms accept only a certain length. The app shows a counter and names the recipients whose limit you are over. Shorten the letter or leave those recipients out.
  • No way to reach an office. If we have no email address or delivery route for a member, we tell you before you send.
