What is the statute changes view?

For Tennessee bills, the analysis can show the current law beside the law as the bill would change it.

Most bills change existing law: they add a sentence here, strike a subsection there. Reading the bill alone, it is hard to see the result. The statute changes view shows it.

What it shows

For each section of the Tennessee Code a bill cites, you see the current law and the law as the bill would change it, with the additions and deletions marked, like the "track changes" view in a word processor.

Where to find it

The view is built when the bill is analyzed, so generate the AI analysis first.

  • Website: open the full analysis and choose Statute changes.
  • App: the Statutes tab on the bill's page. Before the bill is analyzed, the tab says statute changes come with the analysis and offers the button to generate it.

Good to know

  • Tennessee only, for now. Other states' bills do not have this view yet.
  • Some sections cannot be shown, for example when the bill's drafting is unusual or the current text of a section is not available. Those sections are left out rather than shown wrong.
  • Current law comes from a legal data provider, credited on the view, and is checked again periodically. The Tennessee Code published by the state is the official text.
  • It is a reading aid, not legal advice. Read the bill itself before relying on a change.
