How do special sessions show up?
Bills from an open special session appear alongside the regular session's bills, marked Special Session.
A governor or the legislature can call a special session (some states say extraordinary session) to deal with particular subjects outside the regular session.
While a special session is open:
- Home says so, for example "In special session" with its name, and its bills appear in your suggestions, in Needs your voice and in This week at the Capitol.
- Its bills carry a Special Session label wherever they appear.
- Browse can show one session at a time. Use the session choice in Browse's filters to see only the special session's bills, or all sessions together.
When the special session adjourns, its bills leave Home's suggestions but stay in Browse and in your followed bills. They belong to the same legislature as the regular session they were held during, so switching legislatures brings them along.
Special sessions often move quickly, sometimes from filing to final vote in a few days. If you want to weigh in, write early.
