Why does a bill's status look out of date or odd?

Legislatures record actions in different ways and some updates arrive a little later; here is what usually explains it.

Bill status comes from each legislature's official record, delivered to us by LegiScan throughout the day. A few things commonly make a status look wrong when it is not.

The update has not arrived yet. A vote in the afternoon may take a few hours to show up, and some legislatures post their records the next day.

The chamber is slow to send the bill on. After a chamber passes a bill, the official status often waits until the bill is formally sent to the other chamber, which can take days. When the history shows a passage vote, we show the bill as passed by that chamber even if the formal status has not caught up.

Each state uses its own words. One state "refers" a bill, another "assigns" it. A Calendar committee in one state schedules floor votes, while in another every committee is a policy committee. We use your state's own terms where we can.

Hearings get postponed. A bill can be on a committee's agenda several times before it is heard. The newest date wins.

Companion bills move separately. In some states the House and Senate versions move at the same time, so one may look "behind". See the article on companion bills.

The legislature adjourned. A bill that did not pass before adjournment shows as ended, even though it was never voted down.

Placeholder bills change completely. A short placeholder bill can be rewritten by amendment into something very different. See the article on placeholder bills.

The legislature's own website is always the official record. If a status still looks wrong after a day, report it. See the article on where our information comes from.
