What does a bill's page show?

A bill's page brings together its summary, status and journey, sponsors, votes, text, amendments and our analysis.

Open any bill from Browse, your followed bills, Home or the calendar. Here is what you will find.

The top of the page

  • The bill number, title and status, such as "Introduced", "Engrossed" or "Passed".
  • In plain English: a short AI summary of what the bill does.
  • Labels such as Special Session, a placeholder bill label, or our recommendation once the bill has been analyzed.
  • Follow to add it to your list, the alerts bell (Notify me of updates on the website), and Take action to write to the legislators deciding it.

Where it stands

The bill's journey: introduced, each committee, the floor of each chamber, then the governor (or the President, or DC's Mayor) and law. It shows which committee holds the bill now and the full legislative history line by line. In the app this is the Status tab.

Sponsors

The members who filed the bill and its cosponsors, using your state's own words. Some states say Author, Patron or Introducer instead of Sponsor.

Votes

Each roll call, committee and floor, with the result. Choose a vote to see how every member voted. In the app, your own legislators are highlighted. Not every legislature publishes committee votes.

Text, amendments and other documents

  • Bill text opens the bill as it was filed, in a reader on the page.
  • Enacted text appears once the bill has become law.
  • Amendments and documents lists other versions, amendments marked Adopted, Withdrawn or Pending, and supporting documents such as fiscal notes, which estimate a bill's cost. Fiscal notes and some other documents open as the legislature's own file.

In the app, the Documents section holds the same list.

Analysis

Our AI analysis in three parts, with a recommendation to support, oppose or keep watching. See the article on the AI analysis. In Tennessee, the analysis also shows the changes to state law. See the article on statute changes.
