How do I see how our bills are read on our website?
The "Your website" section of Analytics shows bill page views, visitors, Take action clicks and letters from your website, reported by the WordPress plugin and your embeds.
Open Analytics under Administration in the left navigation and scroll below the main charts to Your website. It shows how the bills you publish are read on your own website and how many of those readers go on to write.
Where the numbers come from
- The WordPress plugin, version 0.4.0 or later, with Report visits to Conservative States turned on. It is on by default, under Settings → Conservative States → Visits in WordPress. Earlier versions of the plugin report nothing, so update it first.
- Your embedded bill list and single-bill embeds, and your own bill pages on Conservative States.
Visits are counted in the visitor's browser, so pages your site serves from a cache still count. Only your connected sites and your Allowed websites can report.
What is sent: the bill, the page on your site, the site that referred the visitor, any campaign tags in the address, and a random id for the browser tab. No cookie, and nothing about the visitor: no name, address or account.
Until a site is connected or a visit is reported, the section shows a short note with a link to Website settings instead of numbers.
What you see
Pick the period at the top of the Analytics page: 7d, 30d, 90d or Session. The section names the sites that reported in that period, then shows:
- Bill page views: how many times your bill pages and bill lists were viewed.
- Visitors: how many different browser tabs viewed them.
- Take action clicks: how many times the Take action button was clicked.
- Letters from your website: how many of those visitors went on to send a letter.
Each figure compares with the period before.
Below them:
- Bill page views over time, a chart for the period.
- Website funnel: visitors who read a bill, clicked Take action, and sent.
- Top bills on your website: the ten most viewed bills, with views, visitors, clicks and letters. A letter is credited to the bill whose Take action button was clicked, not to every bill the visitor read.
On a tracked bill's page, under Show on your website, you will also see how many times that bill was viewed on your website in the last 30 days.
If the numbers look low or empty
- Check the plugin version on your site, under Settings → Website embeds → WordPress sites on Conservative States. It must be 0.4.0 or later.
- In WordPress, check that Report visits to Conservative States is on.
- Check the period. "No visits in this period" means nothing was reported in that window.
- Views are only counted for bills you mark Show on website.
Website visit records are kept for 400 days.
