How do letter drafts and AI writing work on action pages?
Write a starting letter yourself or with AI, what supporters can change before they send, and how the Letters page shows whether a letter was your text, an AI draft or edited.
Your starting letter
In the The letter part of an action page's form you write a starting Subject and Message. Supporters start from it. You can write it yourself or click Write subject and message with AI.
- On a bill page, the AI writes from the bill and your position on it.
- On an issue page, it writes from The ask and your Background for the letters. Write the ask first; the AI buttons wait for it.
The other Write with AI buttons draft the page's title, headline and body text. On an issue page the body text is yours to write. Nothing the AI writes is saved until you save the page, and you can edit all of it.
You can leave the starting letter empty. Each supporter then gets an AI draft written for them from your page when they reach the letter step.
What supporters can change
Supporters can change everything in the subject and message before they send. They can also click Regenerate with AI, add a personal angle (for example "I'm a small business owner worried about..."), and click Generate for a new draft in their own voice, or Regenerate default to start over. To keep things fair, a supporter can ask for only a few new drafts on one page each hour; after that they edit the letter themselves.
Supporters do not choose who the letter goes to beyond your page's recipients, and they cannot change your page's position. A greeting and their name are added for them. When a legislator's web form has a length limit, the letter step shows a character count.
If the AI cannot answer, the supporter gets a plain letter built from the page instead, and can edit it.
Where the letter came from
Every letter records where its text came from. You will see it on the action page's Letters screen (from Read the letters on the page's detail screen) and in each supporter's action history:
- Page's letter: sent as your starting letter, unchanged.
- AI draft: sent as the AI wrote it for the supporter, unchanged.
- Edited: the supporter changed the text before sending.
This is worked out by Conservative States from the letter that was actually sent, compared with the draft the supporter started from. It is not something the supporter declares. Opening a letter in a supporter's action history shows the Original draft beside the Letter sent, with the words the supporter added highlighted.
If you change the page's starting letter later, letters already sent keep the label they were given.
The Letters screen
Letters lists every letter from the page, with the date, the supporter, who it was sent to, and the letter. You can filter by date (From, To), Recipient (name or email), Sent by (how it was sent), and Edited by the supporter only.
Download CSV exports the filtered list, one row per recipient. Tick Include the letter text to add the letters themselves. Every staff role can see and export letters.
Drafts a supporter started but never sent are deleted after 30 days.
