Can we use Conservative States inside Claude, ChatGPT or other AI apps?
Through MCP connections, staff can ask AI apps such as Claude and Codex about bills, votes and legislators using Conservative States data.
MCP is a standard way for AI apps to use outside tools. With an MCP connection, an AI app such as Claude, Claude Code or Codex can look up bills, bill text, votes, legislators and committees in Conservative States while you work with it.
Open the menu under your name, choose Settings, then MCP connections. The section links to a connection guide with step-by-step instructions for every tested app.
Who can use it
- An Owner turns the feature on or off with the switch under External AI access. Turning it on gives nobody access by itself.
- Once it is on, Owners, Editors and Analysts can each create their own connection. Viewers cannot.
- Each person's connection sees only what their role allows.
Two ways to connect
Sign in from the app. This is recommended and is all most apps need. Add the server address shown under Connect an AI app to your AI app, then approve the sign-in screen. In Claude, that is under Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector. A signed-in connection is the only kind that can read your organization's own tracked bills and positions.
Use a token. This is for tools that cannot open a browser, such as terminal agents, scripts and automation. Under Your connections, choose Create a token, name it after the machine it will live on, choose when it expires and choose Create token. The token is shown once, so copy it right away. A token connection reads public legislative data only: bills, votes, legislators and committees, never your organization's positions.
What a connection can do
A connected AI app can read bills and their text, amendments and analysis, votes, legislators and committees, session totals and recent legislative activity. It cannot change anything, send anything or act on your behalf.
Seeing and revoking connections
Your connections lists each connection, marked Signed in or Token, with when it was created and last used. Choose Revoke to cut one off immediately.
The usage panel shows how many calls were made, how many connections were used and which tools were called. It never shows what was asked. Query contents are not kept.
The AI Analyst is different
The AI Analyst in the left navigation is built into the portal and runs on your organization's own AI provider key. See the article on the AI Analyst.
If this does not solve it, email support@conservativestates.app and tell us your organization's name.
