How do I see how an alert did?

Reading the numbers, the Delivery Log and the actions credited to an alert on its page.

Open Alerts in the left navigation and click the alert. The Alerts list already shows each alert's status, recipients, delivered count, sent date and created date. You can filter the list by status with the menu above it.

The numbers at the top

BoxWhat it means
RecipientsHow many supporters the alert was sent to
DeliveredHow many emails the receiving mail servers accepted
BouncedEmails rejected because the address is bad. Those supporters are skipped on future alerts until their email changes.
FailedEmails that could not be delivered because of a temporary problem, such as a full mailbox
OpenedOpens, with the open rate (opens divided by delivered)
ClickedLink clicks, with the click rate (clicks divided by delivered)

Opened and Clicked count every open and every click, so one person who opens an alert three times adds three. Treat open numbers as a rough guide. Some email apps load emails automatically, which can count as an open, and others block the tracking that records opens.

The numbers fill in over the minutes and hours after a send as mail servers report back.

Actions credited to the alert

After an alert is sent, a box under the numbers shows how many actions, by how many supporters, are credited to the alert. An action counts when a supporter clicked a Take Action button or action page link in this email and then took action on that page. If nobody has yet, the box says so.

Shows the message as it was written for this alert.

Delivery Log

Once an alert has been sent, the Delivery Log lists every recipient, 50 per page. For each one you see:

  • Email
  • Status: pending, sent, delivered, bounced, failed or complained
  • Sent: when it went out
  • Opened: the first time they opened it, with a count if they opened it more than once
  • Clicked: the first time they clicked, with a count if they clicked more than once
  • Error: the reason the mail server gave for a bounce or failure

Complained means the supporter marked the alert as spam. They are unsubscribed automatically. See "What happens when a supporter unsubscribes or marks an alert as spam?"

Comparing alerts over time

The Analytics page shows broader trends, such as which send times get the most opens. It is described in the analytics articles.
