What does a supporter see on an action page?
The steps a supporter goes through on your action page, from signing up to choosing recipients, editing the letter, sending it and sharing the page.
This is the path a supporter takes on one of your published action pages, whether they open it from its link, an alert, or your website.
The page
The page shows your headline and text, and on a bill page your position ("We Support This Bill" or "We Oppose This Bill") with the bill's details, sponsors and documents. Share buttons sit on the page. The main button carries your Button text (by default "Send Your Message").
Clicking the button opens the letter steps in a window over the page.
1. Sign up or sign in
A visitor who is not signed in is asked to join your organization first. The window explains that the letter is signed with their name and goes to the officials who represent their address.
- I'm new here: first and last name, email (typed twice), a password of at least 8 characters, and a street address, city, state and ZIP code. A box to receive campaign updates and action alerts is ticked by default and can be unticked. A short security check runs in the background. They click Join and continue.
- I have an account: their email and password.
- On the action page itself (not when it is embedded in your website), someone with a Conservative States subscription can choose Have a Conservative States subscription? Sign in with it.
The address decides who represents them, so it must be a real street address.
2. Their recipients
The window loads their legislators and the other officials the page writes to, and shows "Your letter goes to the officials below." Officials they already wrote to at this stage or round are marked Already written to. If there are more than 30, they choose up to 30. They click Continue to Message.
3. The letter
They see the subject and message. If the page has a starting letter, they start from it. If not, a draft is written for them by AI from your page. They can:
- edit the subject and message freely,
- click Regenerate with AI, add a personal angle (for example "I'm a small business owner worried about..."), and click Generate, or Regenerate default for a fresh draft.
A greeting and their name are added for them. See the article on letter drafts.
4. Sending
How the letter leaves depends on the recipient and on the supporter:
- From their own email account. If they connected Gmail or Outlook, the letter sends directly from their address with one click. They can connect an account from the letter step or in their dashboard settings.
- From their email app. Otherwise Open in Email App opens their mail program with the letter ready. When they come back, they are asked "Did you send the email?" and click Yes, I sent it. If the letter is too long for an email app, they copy it instead.
- Through a legislator's web form. Some legislators take letters only through a contact form on their legislature's site. For many of them, Conservative States delivers the letter to the office on the supporter's behalf, with their name, address and email. Some forms also need a title (such as Mr. or Ms.) and a phone number, which the supporter is asked for once.
- Officials with only a web form that we do not fill in. The supporter copies the letter, clicks Continue to the web form, sends it there, and then clicks I sent it.
5. Thank you and sharing
After sending they see your thank-you heading and message (by default "Thank you for taking action!"), your follow-up button if you added one, and share buttons that ask others to write too.
Every letter is recorded in your results: on the action page's detail screen, in Read the letters, and on the supporter's record.
When something stops them
- "This page is not taking letters right now." The page was unpublished, or has no recipients for this supporter.
- "This bill is no longer active." The bill can no longer be acted on.
- No district found. The address could not be matched to a district. The supporter should check their address.
- Already written. They have written to these officials at this stage or round.
If a supporter cannot finish, they can still copy the letter and send it themselves.
If this does not solve it, email support@conservativestates.app and tell us your organization's name.
