How do share buttons and source tracking work on action pages?

Set what your action page's share buttons share, tag your own links so you can tell your channels apart, and read the Sources table to see where visits, signups and letters came from.

Share buttons

Every published action page has share buttons: Share on X, Share on Facebook, Copy link, and on phones a Share button that opens the phone's own share menu. They appear on the page and again on the thank-you step, which asks supporters to get others to write too.

You control what they share in the Sharing and search part of the action page's form:

  • Text for share buttons: the words that go with the link, up to 280 characters.
  • Link to share instead of this page: for example the page on your own website that shows this action page. It must start with https://. Leave it blank to share the action page itself.
  • Search title, Search description and the social image: how the page looks in search results and in the preview card when it is shared. Leave the text blank to use the page's title and headline. With no image, a preview is generated for you.

Each share button adds its own tag to the link, so you can see later whether people arrived from X, Facebook, a copied link or a phone share.

Tag your own links

When you post the page's link in your newsletter, an email, or an ad, add a campaign tag to the end of it so those visits are counted separately. Add utm_source with a short name for the channel, for example:

https://exampletaxpayers.conservativestates.app/...?utm_source=newsletter

Use the page's live link from its detail screen (Copy link) and add the tag after it. Tags may use letters, numbers, dots, dashes and underscores. The Sources table shows the tag as you wrote it, so pick names your team will recognize.

The Sources table

Sources shows where visits, signups and letters came from over the last 30 days. You will find it on each action page's detail screen, and for the whole campaign on the campaign's page.

Each row is one source, with its Visits, Signups and Letters. Sources read like this:

  • Shared on X, Shared on Facebook, Copied link, Shared from a phone: a supporter's share button.
  • newsletter (or any tag you added): your own tagged links.
  • On exampletaxpayers.org: the page embedded on your website, or opened from your WordPress site.
  • From facebook.com (or another site): a site that linked to the page without a tag.
  • Direct: no tag and no referring site, such as a typed or bookmarked link.

A tag and a website can combine, for example "newsletter · on exampletaxpayers.org". Up to 50 sources are listed; the rest are grouped as Other.

How signups are credited

  • A new supporter is credited to the action page (and its campaign) where they joined, and to the source of the visit that brought them. That first source is kept and never changes later.
  • A supporter who was already on your list is not counted as a new signup, but their letters are still credited to the source they came from this time.
  • Letters are counted per submission: one supporter writing to five officials at once counts as one.
  • Visits are reported by the visitor's browser. Signups and letters come from our own records.
