Why do my letters include my name and street address?
Offices read and count mail from their own constituents, and your address is how they confirm you are one.
Legislators answer to the people who live in their district. Their offices sort incoming mail by whether it comes from a constituent, and many will not read or count a letter that does not show where the writer lives. Your name and street address are what let an office confirm you are one of the people it represents.
How your address is used
- To find who represents you. We match your home address to your legislative and congressional districts. That decides which members of a chamber receive your letter.
- To sign your letter. Letters sent from a connected Gmail or Outlook account, and letters we deliver to an office for you, end with your name and street address. Letters delivered to members of Congress or through an office's web form also include your email address, because those systems require it.
- Some offices ask for more. A few official contact forms also require a title, such as Mr. or Ms., or a phone number. We ask you for them only when an office you are writing to requires them.
When a letter opens in your own email app, it is signed with your name. Consider adding your street address under it before you send.
Can I leave my address off?
Subscribers can turn off Include my street address in letters in Settings. Offices may then be unable to confirm that you are a constituent, so we recommend leaving it on.
Keep it current
Use the address where you live. If you move, update it in your profile so your letters go to your new representatives. You can change your address once every 6 months; email us if you need to change it sooner.
