Conservative States

Are the summaries and letters written by AI?

Yes. Bill summaries, analyses, recommendations and letter drafts are written with OpenAI's models; they are a starting point, so check them against the bill itself.

What AI writes

Conservative States uses artificial intelligence, through OpenAI's models, to write:

  • the one-sentence summaries shown with bills,
  • the plain-English analyses of what a bill does and why it matters,
  • the support, oppose or watch recommendations, written from a conservative perspective,
  • the letter drafts you can send to your legislators, and
  • some of the writing organizations use, such as alert and letter drafts their staff review.

Bill text, status, votes, sponsors and hearing dates are not written by AI. They come from the legislatures' official records.

How to use it

  • Treat it as a starting point. AI can misread a bill or leave something out. Before you rely on a summary, read the bill's text, which is linked from every bill, or check the legislature's official website.
  • It is not legal advice. Our analyses and recommendations are our opinion.
  • Read every letter before you send it. It goes out in your name. Change anything that does not sound like you; a letter in your own words often carries more weight.
  • Organization positions are the organization's. On an organization's pages, the position on a bill and its statement are written by the organization, even when its staff used AI to help.

What we send to the AI

To draft a letter, we send the bill's details, your position on it and any personal note you wrote. Your name and address are added to the letter afterward and are not sent to the AI. Under OpenAI's terms for its API, the information we send is not used to train its models.
