How is my letter sent: from my email, my email app, or delivered for me?
Depending on the office and your settings, your letter goes from your own Gmail or Outlook account, opens in your email app, is delivered for you, or is pasted into an official web form.
Every office accepts mail a little differently, so your letter can travel in a few ways. The window tells you which one applies before you send.
From your own Gmail or Outlook account
If you connected Gmail or Outlook, the window says "Sends directly from" your address, and the button reads Send Email (or Send Emails with a count). The letter goes from your own address, signed with your name and your street address, city, state and ZIP code, and a copy lands in your Sent folder. To use your email app instead for this letter, choose Use my email app instead.
To connect an account, open the menu under your name on your supporter dashboard, choose Settings, and under Email Accounts for Advocacy choose Connect Gmail or Connect Outlook. You can connect one account. If it later shows Reconnect needed, choose Reconnect and sign in to your email again. When the action form is shown inside an organization's own website, you can connect from the form itself with Connect Gmail or Connect Outlook.
Through your email app
If no account is connected, the window says "This will open in your default email app (Gmail, Outlook, Mail, etc.)" and the button reads Open in Email App. Your email app opens with the recipients, subject and letter filled in. Send it from there, then come back and choose Yes, I sent it so the action is recorded. Go back and edit returns you to the letter.
A letter sent this way is signed with your name. Consider adding your street address under your name so the office can see you are a constituent.
If the letter is too long to open in an email app, the window asks you to choose Copy the letter, paste it into a new email, send it, and then come back and tell us.
Delivered for you
Some offices, including members of Congress, take letters only through official systems or website forms. Next to those names you will see via congressional delivery or via web form, and the window says the letter will be "Delivered to their office on your behalf by Conservative States, with your name, address and email." The button reads Send Letter. Congress's systems are being connected office by office; if a letter cannot be delivered that way yet, its status in your sent letters says so.
A few offices also require a title (such as Mr. or Ms.) or a phone number. If so, you will see "Some offices need a little more from you before this letter can be delivered." Fill in Title or Phone and choose Save and send.
Through an official web form you fill in
Some officials take letters only through their own website form, which we cannot fill in for you. They are marked through the official web form. After you send to everyone else, the window lists them. For each one, choose Copy the letter, then Open the form, paste the letter into the form and send it, and then choose I sent it. You will see "Recorded. Thank you."
