Can I change the letter the page writes for me?

Yes. The draft is a starting point; you can edit the subject and message, add a personal angle and have it rewritten, or write your own.

After you choose your recipients, the window shows a Subject and a Message. While "Generating your message..." is showing, a draft is being written for you. Depending on how the organization set up the page, the draft is either the organization's own suggested letter or one written by artificial intelligence from the bill and the organization's position.

Editing it yourself

Click into the subject or the message and change anything you like. A letter in your own words, with a sentence about why the issue matters to you, tends to carry more weight with an office than a form letter.

You do not need to add a greeting or sign your name. As the note under the message says, "A greeting and your name will be added automatically."

Having it rewritten

Choose Regenerate with AI above the message. A box titled Add a personal angle (optional) opens. Type a line or two about you, such as "I'm a small business owner worried about..." and choose Generate. To start over from the standard draft, choose Regenerate default. Choose Hide AI options to close the box.

If you see "Too many drafts for now. Edit the letter yourself, or try again later," you have asked for several drafts on this page within the hour. Edit the letter yourself, or come back later.

Character limits

Some offices only accept letters through a website form that has a length limit. When one of your recipients has a limit, a counter appears under the message, for example "1,850 / 2,000 characters, including the greeting." If the letter is too long, shorten it or uncheck that recipient before sending.

Good to know

  • Read the draft before you send it. AI-written text can contain mistakes, and the letter goes out in your name.
  • Your name and address are not sent to the AI. They are added to the letter afterward.
  • The organization can see the letter you sent and whether you changed its suggested wording.
